Coffee is grown in on Mount Kilimanjaro which is near the border of Kenya. This is where most of the coffee is grown; coffee is referred to as Kilimanjano, Moshi or Arusha. In the regions between Lakes Tanganyika and Nyasa, coffee grown is marketed by the name Mbeya.
Wet process used on all coffee; coffee is Grade by the bean size e.g. ‘AA’ and is shaded by banana trees. Peaberry sold separately at a premium due to their enhanced flavor.
Harvest is from October to February.
NGAKA – CoffeeCentral Pulpery Unit
INTRODUCTION
Ngaka Central Pulpery Unit is located about 15kms west of Mbinga Town and it is about 1400mts above sea level. The CPU is owned by Ngaka Co-operative Primary Society. There are about 680 members of the society and the area covered with coffee trees is over 300 acres, most of the trees are aged but from the late 1990’s many new coffee seedlings of better variety and species have been planted in the area extensively.
MODE OF OPERATION:
This is an old Central Pulpery, which is operated jointly by Mbinga Coffee Curing Company Ltd and Ngaka Cooperative Society. This kind of operation started in 2001/2. In this joint venture, Mbinga Coffee Curing Co. Ltd provides funds for operating/ running the central pulpery. Farmers are paid their first payment immediately when they deliver their red ripe cherries for processing. Second payment to farmers is done after selling the green coffees normally through the Tanzania Coffee Boards weekly auctions.
PRODUCTION AND QUALITY TRENDS:
Production of parchment coffee at Ngaka CPU have been as follows:- In 2001/2002 – 18 tons, 2002/2003 – 90 tons, 2003/2004 – 38.5 tons, 2004/2005 – 102.5 tons, 2005/2006 – 59 tons, 2006/2007 – 127 tons, 2007/2008-196 tons. Most of the coffees are sold through the Tanzania Board Auction. In the 2007/2008 season most of the coffees produced from this CPU were sold directly to Switzerland. The produced coffees have an average quality of class 4 to 6. Ngaka CPU coffee is FAIR TRADE (FLO) certified, (ID No 14162) Ngaka Specialty Coffee has the following Unique cup test characteristics:-
(i) Good Aroma
(ii) Good flavor and acidity (Fruity) lemon
(iii) It has well balanced body when tested
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT NGAKA CPU:
Coffee farming at Ngaka is mainly done by small scale farmers by having small farms around their homes.
ALTITUDE:
Coffee at Ngaka is grown along the high Ngaka highland/plateau with an altitude of about 1300 to 1800 metres above sea level and in some areas, it is over 2000 metres above sea level.
CLIMATIC CONDITIONS:
Temperature in the coffee growing area of Ngaka lies between 15Co to 27C0. We have monomodal type of rainfall which lasts for about 5 months from December to April. Annual rainfall ranges between 1400 to 1800mm.
SOIL CONDITIONS:
Most of the Ngaka area has fertile alluvial and loamy soil with PH 4.8 to 6.2.
FUTURE PLANS OF MBINGA COFFEE CURING CO. LTD
The company future plan is to continue assisting Mbinga farmers to produce quality coffee by installing and operating more Central Pulpery Units in Mbinga District.
The company in collaboration or partnership with other investors (local or foreign), is planning to start its own coffee estates in Mbinga District and in Iringa Region in order to improve both quality and quantity of coffee production.
