Nicaragua has an extensive coast line which faces North Pacific Ocean; mountains give rise to central areas and the continent narrows with volcanoes. In lowland the climate is tropical and it becomes cooler in the highlands.

Coffee is grown in the mountains of Matagalpa, in the high mountain of Jinotega and in the forested mountains of Nueva Segovia. Coffee is defined by the elevation grown and most of the coffee is grown at 700 to 1,200 meters above sea level. SHG (strictly high grown) is the highest grading. More producers today are adopting the organic method of growing coffee and Jinotega produces approximately 80% of the nation’s coffee.

Harvest is from October to December.
