Java is located above the top of Australia; on the north is Borneo; to the northwest is Sumatra and to the east is Bali. Most of Java is volcanic mountains which form a line from east to west. Sumatra is an island that runs northwest to southwest and is divided by the equator at the centre. The island is dominated by 2 regions – Barisan Mountains (the highest point is Mt Kerinci which is an active volcano) in the west and swamps in the east.
In Java coffee is grown in the east on mountains at 1,500 meters above sea level. Sumatra’s south coast coffee is marketed as Mandheling or Lintong (grown in the shade with no chemicals on small farms) while in the west, coffee is marketed as Gayo Mountain (grown at the basin of the mountain; around Lake Tawar, in the shade). Both Robusta and Arabica coffee is grown.
Harvest is throughout the year.
