

Costa Rica is situated in Central America between the Caribbean Sea and the North Pacific Ocean. It borders Nicaragua and Panama and it has a rugged mountainous area with several volcanoes. Main coffee regions are Tarrazu which rises to 3500 to 4000 feet above sea level; Tres Rios located north of San Jose, with its rolling hills and mountains and Heredia which has dense tropical forests, volcanic mountains and lush coffee plantations.
Costa Rica is the only country that strictly procedures coffee of Arabica, being Caturra, followed by Mondo Novo and Catuai. All Costa Rican coffee is classified depending on the altitude grown and if grown on the Atlantic or Pacific side. SHB (strictly hard bean) is grown at 1,500 to 1,700 meters above sea level, whereas HB (hard bean) is grown at 1,350 to 1,500 meters above sea level. HGA stands for high ground Atlantic and LGA (low grown Atlantic) means lowland coffee gown on the Atlantic side.
